Rav Up Those Brews – Part 2

Good day mates,

Last time on Brew City, our heroes were making janky decks with the new Guilds of Ravnica cards. I hope everyone had a good and rewarding pre-release as we dive back into some spicy brews.

With the printing of a new and improved Explosive Vegetation in Circuitous Route, we can finally play 5 color jank and/or ramp in standard. I have combined the best of both worlds to make this deck.

This is a 5-color deck that utilizes these two artifact bois: Awakened Amalgam and Chamber Sentry (RIP Walking Ballista). With the support of Circuitous Route, Chromatic Lantern and District Guide, it is easy to cast Chamber Sentry as a 5/5. Since we are playing 5 colors and all the Gates, Awakened Amalgam will always be a big boi when you cast him. He will continue to grow and can reach his max potential as a 22/22 in this deck. I envision him to be even bigger in the next set with access to more Gates and Shocklands.

This is also a ramp deck with Gift of Paradise, Circuitous Route and Chromatic Lantern. The pay-offs include Pelakka Wurm which lets you stabilize; Multani, Yavimaya’s Avatar, which is a big recurring beefy boi; Star of Extinction to wipe out pesky creatures and Banefire to dome them directly.

There are quite a few spicy ways to finish your opponent in the deck. You can straight out attack with huge fatties, or shoot them down by casting and re-casting Chamber Sentry. My favourite way is to Gravitic Punch your opponent with one of your big bois. If that wasn’t enough, here’s the spiciest tech: turn 2 Chamber Sentry can lead to a flipped turn 3 Hadana’s Climb. Winged Temple of Orazca can end games quickly when you DOUBLE your fatties and fly them across, annihilating your opponent.

Dimir One-Shot Etrata

Etrata, the Silencer‘s win-condition is up there with Hedron Alignment in terms of difficulty. However, nothing is impossible in Brew City.

Mainboard Sideboard
Artifact 1
1x Helm of the Host

Creature 8
4x Etrata, the Silencer
4x Lazav, the Multifarious

Enchantment 9
4x Dead Weight
2x Deep Freeze
2x Enhanced Surveillance
1x Metamorphic Alteration

Instant 7
4x Opt
3x Sinister Sabotage

Sorcery 12
2x Chart a Course
3x Discovery // Dispersal
3x Notion Rain
4x Thought Erasure

Land 23
4x Drowned Catacomb
8x Island
2x Memorial to Genius
5x Swamp
4x Watery Grave
Sideboard 15
4x Nightveil Predator
4x Curious Obsession
4x Negate
3x Spell Pierce

We have placed her in a mid-range Dimir deck but our removal package is definitely unique. First things first, in order to win with Etrata, she must have creatures to remove. Therefore, instead of killing our opponents creatures, we will be using auras to minimize their presence. Dead Weight can shrink them, Deep Freeze turns them into a harmless wall and Metamorphic Alteration can turn dragons into dorks.

Finding Etrata will be a tough order, but luckily we have jam-packed the deck with lots of Surveil cards. Together with Enhanced Surveillance, we can dig deep to look for Etrata.

Etrata needs to take out 3 dudes in order to win, in order to speed up the process, we also have ways of cloning her. Lazav, the Multifarious can get around the legendary rule because he retains his own name while duplicating Etrata’s ability. Helm of the Host lets you one-shot Etrata by making 2 clones and taking out 3 creatures all in one go. (Yes it is a turn 8 combo but if anyone would understand how revenge is a dish best served icy, it would be Dimir.)

Lastly, what if you’re facing a degenerate control player who doesn’t play any creatures? Well show them who’s boss by siding out Etrata, and siding in 4 Nightveil Predator and slap 4 Curious Obsession on them and watch your opponent weep when you draw more cards to them.

Until next time, take care of yourself, good night and good brewing
