Hi everyone and welcome back to think outside the box!
Last week I wrote about how excited I was for dinosaurs coming out the new set and gave my initial list that I was going to be working on. Today I want to share my most recent list and explain my choices. Let me start by saying I believe dinosaurs now will be a real player in the new format, the raw power level of the deck is quite high and it can finish games real quickly.
Here is my current list:
6 forest
4 mountain
3 abrade
SIDEBOARD
1 abrade
This is my current build and I’m happy with it. There has been a few changes and they are for the better i think. I will quickly say that settle the wreckage is a problem coming out the U/W Approach decks. Realistically I believe that mono red will push that out the format.
So, card choices:
4 otepec huntmaster. I mentioned that i didn’t know how many of these i wanted, after a couple of games playing with them 4 is correct. Giving haste is fantastic and the reduction is also incredible.
2 ranging raptors. After playing with this card I feel that 2 is correct, I like having the ramp effect, but having a base 2/3 is sometimes horrible, when this card goes to work it is certainly silly.
4 deathgorge scavenger Boy, was I impressed by this card. This card single handily wins vs gift. It gives torrential gearhulk decks a hard time and the life gain is welcomed vs mono red.
1 burning suns avatar 1 is correct, maybe 2. Searing blazeosaur as i described it makes for fast games. The amount of control online makes this card a little worse but getting to fry something while swinging for a billion with your chunky dinos is certainly worth having this effect around.
1 struggle//survive An answer to scarab god in the main deck.
BOARD
3 atzocan archer just another card for mono red, hasn’t come up much but in practice it seems ok.
The sideboard I believe is very interchangeable. Customize at your own will, I like having the extra cards for control. One card I want to try over the archer is raptor hatchling as I believe that it will be a pain in the neck for mono red to deal with cleanly.
“So, Ronnie what do we do?”
The short answer to this question I believe is just to wait. This coming weekend we have the SCG Dallas open. This usually tells us what decks and we get any new decks that are floating around or that we have missed, personally I love “week one” standard as we get to see all the new brews and other takes on decks that some people may not have thought of, more importantly though we will see a week one metagame and get to start building from there.
What do you guys think? Millions of mono red? Temur menace still on top? UG merfolk taking down the thing?
Man, i wish this was a dinosaur.
Thanks for reading, feel free to ask questions, tell me I’m wrong or leave any suggestions!
Till next time!
Ronnie.
