Hello everyone! Today I am going to write a Primer for Modern Esper Tokens deck. Now this deck is pretty consistent and very powerful. Looking at the last 2 months top 8 decklists, there is only one Tokens deck, and that has red in it. We are in Esper colors and we are using the new Jace (Fitness model lol) on our deck. I think this deck can catch a lot of people off guard and with a good pilot with some testing I really see this deck spiking top 8 in a Grand Prix. Someone up for a task?
Esper Tokens is a three-color Midrangey deck, with ideally great plays every turn. We want to be putting a lot of flying tokens on the battlefield, have enchantment to give them Vigilance and +1/+1. With some more help, they will be even bigger and have lifelink etc. Around turn 5-6 we will overwhelm and overrun our opponent for the win. Our only worry is hand disruption and hexproof aggro. This is why we have control package on the main and secondary package on the side. Let us delve a bit deeper!
Why Esper Token?
The deck is quite linear but you have multiple lines to take all the time. This is why you need to find the best ways to win against different decks. So this is simple enough for novices in Modern but the deck is also competitive enough to Spike and have success with good pilot. And also, some people just love to play a ton of tokens and pump them for the win. For me, it is a fun plan! I like BW Tokens, but I would say that Esper tokens is a lot better, more fun and more powerful! And also, for now you can catch a lot of people off guard, they will not be expecting this deck.
3x Fatal Push
3x Mana Leak
3x Spell Pierce
2x Marsh Flats
Now this is the list I am comfortable. There are some maybe board cards. Talrand, Sky Summoner was on the list as well as playset of Remand. But I really think the deck needs hard counters for the early game, like Spell Pierce and Mana Leak. Remand is just too soft for us to survive. We are not running Opt, because Serum Visions dig a bit deeper and we really don’t benefit anything about the instant speed. I love Opt, but it is not for us in this deck. Talrand is an awesome card in my mind. But it is just too slow for us and for the cost of him we can play Planeswalkers that I see benefit us more in this deck.
Sideboarding Liliana of the Veil just breaks my heart. I just love the card when I am playing it and hate it when I am against it. But for the decks theme I really think Sorin is a tad better. But surely I want her on my 75 cardlist. She saves us against Bogles which is a very bad match up. We also need Liliana against Burn to make them discard or sacrifice Eidolon or some other creature. Against hand disruption we are in trouble. This is why we run Mana Leak and also Spell Pierce. Turn one Thoughtseize is uncounterable but whatever, right?
The Core Cards
Jace, Cunning Castaway
Gives us card draw for two turns and then we will make two copies of him. I think rarely you want to use the -2 ability. Three converted mana cost is awesome for our curve.Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
The powerful Standard card will become awesome Modern card. Makes himself 5/5 indestructible and we can also get the emblem which is the thing we want for our token army. If needed, will also provide 2/2 tokens which will be pumped with a lot of things in the deck!Sorin, Solemn Visitor
Did force Lili to sideboard, but will do his job well. Gives our creatures +1/0 and lifelink, can make tokens and the Ultimate is a game changer. If you want to play Liliana of the Veil in the main and sideboard Sorin, I am down with that.Intangible Virtue
Enchantment that makes our deck. Tokens get +1/+1 and vigilance? Sign me up. Need to run 4 if one gets destroyed. We need to protect this, but we can win even without it.Lingering Souls
Get tokens and Flashback even more? Sounds good. We are a token deck, so we want to run a full set, no questions asked. Spectral Procession plays similar role.
Now I really believe in this deck. I really haven’t tested with it a lot, but so far I have confidence in it! Tokens can be a powerful deck and I see that this list or with minor changes might be able to spike a Grand Prix. I just love Modern because there is hundreds of ways to play the format and there is something for everything.
