Mythical Magic – Bring to Light Scapeshift

What’s up guys! I am back from a short hiatus, I had a lot going on and I had no time to write! But now everything is done and I am ready to talk about a great deck, BTL (Bring to Light) Scapeshift. I am a huge fan of GR Valakut but after seeing that BTL Scapeshift has done well in the recent tournaments, I just had to delve deeper. For this article I will be posting a list that top 8’d GP Phoenix. This is the list of Sung-jin Ahn. If you are a fan of Control/Combo decks, this might the right Modern deck for you!

The List

1 Breeding Pool
1 Cinder Glade
1 Flooded Grove
2 Forest
1 Hallowed Fountain
3 Island
4 Misty Rainforest
2 Mountain
1 Plains
4 Steam Vents
3 Stomping Ground
1 Temple Garden
2 Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle

4 Sakura-Tribe Elder
1 Snapcaster Mage

4 Bring to Light
3 Cryptic Command
2 Farseek
1 Hunting Wilds
1 Izzet Charm
3 Lightning Bolt

4 Remand
2 Scapeshift
4 Search for Tomorrow
1 Supreme Verdict

2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
2 Search for Azcanta

1 Anger of the Gods
1 Crumble to Dust
1 Destructive Revelry
2 Dispel

1 Engineered Explosives
1 Glen Elendra Archmage
1 Grafdigger’s Cage
1 Madcap Experiment
2 Negate
2 Obstinate Baloth
1 Platinum Emperion
1 Shatterstorm

The unbanning of Jace, the Mind Sculptor was able to elevate this deck back into the fray. This deck is not as aggressive as the GR Valakut version which enables and wants the turn 4 kill. BTL Scapeshift has way more elements in it, especially in form of blue, that brings us a nice control package. Our deck is still able to win turn 4 if we can start off with Search for Tomorrow suspension. But I am more than sure that in this metagame we will be needing our control package in the form of Jace, Cryptic command and Remand. For these reasons we will be only running two copies of Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle. We will have our chance to draw/search for it and after that we can combo ourselves into victory as we can Scapeshift for the lethal damage.

Sakura-Tribe elder is a very important card for our gameplan, because we need it to have 4 mana on turn 3 to be able to cast Cryptic Command. Having one Snapcaster Mage never hurts as it is one of the premier Blue cards in Modern and this deck is no different, we want it, even as a single copy. I see this list’s ratio of Lightning Bolt good as 3 copies. I like to have a single copy of Supreme Verdict as a board wipe as an insurance policy. Wrath of God is a nice alternative.

Bring to Light lists are strong in the meta because we are able to run Cryptic Command in the main which acts as a bouncer for Blood Moon or Leyline of Sanctity that prevent us from winning. GR Titanshifts can attack with Primeval Titan for the win but we don’t have that luxury with this list. Bring to Light let’s us run more pieces of combopieces. Having more than one Scapeshift is bad for us, but Bring to Light can tutor anything different that we want: Scapeshift or something else.

This list is very flexible and the deck adapts better into situations than its GR version. Therefore I can see this deck overtaking the GR Titanshift version and maybe even becoming Tier 1? We will have to wait and see what kinds of cards Dominaria will bring to Modern. I hope you liked this article, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them. I am happy that Valakut decks have good tournament finishes and Congrats to Sung-jin Ahn for his top 8 with this list!
