Sunday Modern

I strolled in to Illuminaudi ready to do battle.  Over a week with no games and I was ready to see how the additions worked out.  I paid my entry and it looked like we 12ish players.  I lost my round one notes but it was pretty one-sided.

Round 1 vs Mono Green Tron Won 2-0

Game 1
I was on the play and started out with 1 drop into 2 drop followed by a lord.  He had turn 3 tron and followed it up with an Oblivion Sower.  Not sure if he had a bad hand or if he wasn’t running Karn and Ugin.  Cast Down was MVP here.

Game 2
I sided in Rain of Tears and kept him off tron while beating in.

Round 2 vs Harold on RG Tron Won 2-1

Game 1
On the play I kept a one creature mass removal hand not knowing what he was on.  This wasn’t your typical tron deck.  He was running multiple enchantments that normally don’t see play that I don’t recall what they were(Bad on me).  But he would drop a World Breaker and deal me its power damage.  This game was horrible and when the second enchantment dropped I went from 20-15-ded.

Game 2
I kept a 2 land 2 one drop double Rain of Tears hand and it was over in 5 turns after hitting another 2 power one drop.

Game 3
This game was super tight.  I hit him with 3 Rain of Tears and he was still able to pull tron together every time.  He landed an Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and took out my white producing lands.  So I was at 20 to his 9 after some beaters and Gerralf’s Messenger.  I took a hit from Ulamog and lost 20 cards and came down to 10.  I had a Messenger and a zombie token that was soon joined by another.  The board ended like this.  He was at 4 with his Ulamog untapped.  I crashed in with both my Messenger and token knowing I had a Cryptbreaker in hand to use as a blocker.  I had expected him to block the token and go to 1 from the Messenger.  Yeah he blocked the Messenger.  I just said sure and went to damage.  He took two from the token.  Messenger went to the bin and as I was undying it he realized he messed up and asked for a redo.  No in this scenario usually I would let him.  It’s a very casual setting, I know him, and usually I am playing because I enjoy it.  But since this was Hero time I respectfully told him I could not and that was that.

Round 3 vs Steven on Affinity Won 2-0

Game 1
On the play I had no one drop but I had Gifted Aetherborn on turn two.  His hand must have bad because I ended up at 31 life.  I chipped away at him with the gifted one and was able to remove his couple of plays like Vault Skirge and Signal Pest.

Game 2
This game was close.  He had me at 2 poison early.  I was able to get down an Aetherborn for some extra life and a couple one drops with a lord.  He was able to keep for a turn or two.  It got to the point where he had an Arcbound Ravager, the Inkmoth Nexus, and enough artifacts to deal the last 8 poison.  But for whatever reason he totally overlooked it for 3 turns.  I was able to land a couple Geralf’s Messenger and get him down to one before I did a Cast Down on my own Messenger post combat to deal the last point.

So going into round 4 with the amount of people who played there was two X-0s.  Myself and a Lantern player.  We shook hands and ID’ed and both got 20 in credit.  Overall I was pleased with how the deck worked out.  The Tidehollow Sculler was good when I played it and was a quick target removal.  I guess taking their best card warrants destruction.  Wayward Servant I saw once and it gained me a couple of life.

Lets take a look at our finances breakdown.

Not to terrible.  We have a good amount of wiggle room to work with on upgrades.  Dark Salvation has been so so.  I feel like that can probably come out now.  I thought about Fatal Push, but without a way to consistently trigger revolt(Fetches) that right now it doesn’t seem to have a spot.  Cast Down has been a fine card to work with as has Victim of Night.  I think I will leave those two in for the time being.  Cryptbreaker, while a good card from the zombies of standard I feel that holding it back to draw a card costs me fast damage.  And its second ability to make a token is fine late in the game.  But early on I find myself not wanting to ditch a usable card.  So it is finally coming out.  Another card I want to touch on is Smuggler’s Copter.  The good ole looter scooter.  That is what I will be replacing the Cryptbreaker with.  Something that will still draw me cards and also it has evasion and is cheap to crew.

Upgrades this week.

After considering upgrades here is what I am going to do.

Main deck changes
-2 Dark Salvation
-4 Cryptbreaker

+3 Smuggler’s Copter -6.00
+4 Dread Wanderer -4.50

SB Changes
-3 Lifebane Zombie
+3 Disenchant -1.00 for a play set

In that tournament alone there was 1 Affinity deck, 1 KCI combo, and 2 Lantern control.  I need a little something for those decks.  I figure for the time being Disenchant should be an OK card.

After making the adjustments here we are
4 Dread Wanderer
Diregraf Ghoul
Gravecrawler
Wayward Servant
Tidehollow Sculler
Gifted Aetherborn
Lord of the Accursed
Geralf’s Messenger
Victim of Night
Cast Down
3 Smuggler’s Copter
12 Swamp

Caves of Koilos
Isolated Chapel

SB
Rain of Tears
Tormod’s Crypt
Pithing Needle
Doom Blade
3 Disenchant

In dropping the Cryptbreaker I am getting more aggressive with Dread Wanderer.  Along with the fact it is a never-ending threat that can keep coming back.  Most of the time.  Dropped one Cast Down to make room for a third Copter.  That is where we will pick up with this Sunday.

An aside about Standard and the Ban list announcements

There were no changes in Standard.  Of which I am okay with.  I could have seen it go either way for out little chainwhirling goblin.  I am looking forward to Magic 2019.  I had been toying with a Mono Black Control deck.  But after running that a couple of times it is not the deck for me.  With Goblin Chainwhirler staying in the format and the new red wizard in M19 I will be sleeving up some Kelding Wizards.  Simple, straight forward, and lower to the ground than Mono Red and RB aggro.  I will also be experimenting with a return to Mono Black Zombies with the printing of three pretty decent ones.  The Legacy bans don’t really affect me at all.  I have played Legacy only a few times.  And only ever as a team trios event.  I think they nailed it by hitting Deathrite Shaman.  Our resident one mana Planeswalker.  The Gitaxian Probe ban surprised me but I get their reasoning.  Read like the same reason it was axed in Modern.

That does it for me this week.  I hope everyone has a good weekend with the Pre-Release.  May your kits open with plenty of bombs.  See you next week.
