Happy Thursday everybody! Hope you all had a great weekend and the week has been good. Last week we ended up taking some bad beats and finishing 1-2 at our Sunday modern event. Which it happens sometimes. But it means there was no addition to our budget. I digress. I was able to jam in two modern tournaments since my last article so there will be some fun reports to read a little later. I am enjoying this a great deal. Usually when I play I play to win. But with this I am able to enjoy a lot more than usual. I don’t usually play much in the way of casual. No EDH or brawl. It is very rare that I will draft. And all of that is mainly due to how much time I have to commit to playing on a week to week basis. Here is where the list is at since our first upgrades.
I have still found myself siding out Duress against anything noncombo and aggro type of decks because I usually want things like Doom Blade for sure and sometimes Lifebane Zombie. I actually sided in Rain of Tears all of once to pick apart lands in the Thoper Sword combo deck. And that look on my opponents face was pretty priceless. Same goes with Withered Wretch. Opponents have seen that and said that they had no idea such a card existed for mono black in modern. The main deck I am pretty happy with (Outside of Duress). The deck does what it is supposed to pretty much all the time. Board wipes happen and that makes for a sad day. When it comes to the sideboard there are two cards I haven’t used very much if at all. Tormod’s Crypt and Pithing Needle. I have sided them both in a total of one time. So I am considering moving on from them. Possibly. Let’s get down to business.
Here we go with a little bit of a report.
Cash 40.00 after entry 35.00
Round 1 vs Joe with Bant Knightfall Won 2-0
I win the die roll and take the play. I get a one drop and beat in for a couple turns. My hand was lite threats but heavy on removal so I keep him off his mana dorks so he cannot go two plays per turn. I get down another threat and keep his field empty and stay at a healthy 20 life.
On the draw this was pretty much a repeat of game 1. He hits me once with a Noble Hierarch and it ends shortly after that.
Round 2 vs Michael with Thopter Sword Won 2-1
I go one drop into one drop while he tries to setup and I am able to take it before Ensnaring Bridge joins the party.
He gets down an early Bridge after I get him to 10. At that point I am using Cryptbreaker to dig for multiple Geralf’s Messenger to try and drain him out by playing them and killing them myself. But I just didn’t see them and he thoptered me out.
On the play I open the perfect hand of triple one drop into a 2 drop and took the match.
Round 3 vs Johnny with Burn Lost 2-1
This is the third straight event that Johnny and I get paired up. I get a couple guys down. He gets a couple guys down in the form of Goblin Guide into Eidolon of the Great Revel. He burns my guys and just beats me down.
Game 2 I come out with a couple guys to his multiple Searing Blaze but have enough removal for his and a couple one drops that are able to finish him off.
Game 3 is a grind fest. He proclaims his hand is not the best but he didn’t want to mulligan and risk a worse one. I get a couple guys down and he gets a Guide on turn one. He takes most of my turn 3 and 4 hits while hitting me with guide and topping burn. This one comes down to him at 9 and me with lethal on my next turn with myself at 2 and him topping burn for the win. And he got it. I was able to fade one draw before that but couldn’t get lucky for the second.
Round 4 vs David with UB Zombies Won 2-0
David is a new player so his deck was a brew. I was able to land threat after threat and he didn’t make a play until turn 3.
Repeat of game 1.
I finish at 3-1 and score 15 in credit. Overall the games were all either the deck doing what it does or it got mid to late game grindy. Still I am happy with the result.
Round 1 vs Jared with Naya Zoo Lost 2-1
Game 1 on the play I get some early guys down and we get in a cluttered up ground state. I have a lord and some one drops with Gifted Aetherborn and he has a couple Voice of Resurgence tokens, a Wild Nactl, and he finished it up with a couple Blood Braid Elf into removal. Very grindy.
I was able to beat down while removing his guys. He started to come back but I had him at 1 and hit a removal spell to push 1 guy through.
Round 2 vs Duston with BW Eldrazi and Taxes
On the draw He gets an early Thalia to slow me down with double duress (If this was IOK this game would have been better). He lands a Tidehollow Sculler takes my removal and it wraps up not long after.
I sided in Doom Blade against his Thalia and Eldrazi and was able to take the game down real quick.
He plays out Aether Vial followed by Aether Vial. I have removal for his plays and it wraps up quick.
Round 3 vs Austin with BR Rock
It’s a three rounder which puts me at 1-2. At 2-1 I would have pulled down 10 in credit. So after two tournaments this week here is where we stand.
Cash 50.00(20 added)
Where does it go from here?
Since my previous article I have STILL been kicking around which direction to go. Do I add the second color? Do I make upgrades and just stay black for the time being? Do I stay the course and keep building up and buy into a different deck? So I had been considering green, red, or white as the second color. After much debating I have taken red off the list. Outside of Lightning Bolt, Terminate, and Kolaghan’s Command there isn’t much else that would boost the power level. Plus there are just no good red zombies. Guess they rate at the bottom of the rung about reanimating red guys. Green was one that I gave serious consideration to considering it gives us great sideboard options and some really strong main deck pieces like creatures and removal. So it is between keeping it mono black or adding white. Let’s take a minute and talk about what each path brings.
If we stay mono black the path to that would be something along the lines of keeping it mono black zombies or mono black devotion/Big black(Phyrexian Obliterator or Demigod of Revenge top out). Additions that can be made would be along the lines of Death Baron (YES!!! Thank you for the reprint), Relentless Dead, Fatal Push, Inquisition of Kozilek, and Thoughtsieze as a starting point to keep it with the aggro theme. Before working into Obliterator, Phyrexian Arena, and our old pal Gray Merchant of…you know what it’s just Gary. Not bad. I have seen a deck such of this have its own success here and there.
Now if we go white that gives us some good upgrades in the short term Path to Exile, Wayward Servant, and Tidehollow Sculler for the main deck. And a good amount of sideboard cards. Long term it could transition into BW Death and Taxes or even BW Eldrazi and Taxes. Or we could eventually branch into a third color for it to be Junk or Mardu.
All that being said and considered I have decided to go to white as my second color.
So we are sitting with 65.00 to work with and still leave some for entry in more events. I considered just keeping it mono black and picking up a set of Fatal Push or Path to Exile as those are the most expensive upgrades to make that isn’t the lands or the creatures. The other option is to forgo getting those two and go ahead and get into the black and white with the lands and the added creatures. Here are the changes I am going to make.
So with the changes made we are here.
4 Diregraf Ghoul
4 Wayward Servant
4 Tidehollow Sculler
4 Gifted Aetherborn
3 Lord of the Accursed
3 Geralf’s Messenger
4 Victim of Night
4 Cast Down
2 Dark Salvation
What are your thoughts? I can’t wait to see how it rolls on Sunday. I will be playing standard for the Store Championship and follow it up with modern. Enjoy your weekend and I will see you next week.
