Embalming Standard

Hello there everyone and welcome back to another think outside the box!

All quiet here on the magic front here in Scotland over the last week. Coming up we have a yearly tradition of the “Scottish Store Championships”. This stemmed from an idea that it would help our national team or WMCQ team to prepare for the constructed format. The winning store takes home a sweet trophy, bragging rights and the responsibility of holding the next years event. This year I will be playing for West End Games, which is also the team I so thankfully play for. Before that though, we have a PPTQ in Largs which I will be attending as it is the closest to where I stay (the middle of nowhere).

Graveyard style decks are at the pinnacle of what I love to do in magic. After RR started playing the Rampaging Ferocidon main, it was giving me a major headache, I remember mentioning briefly about how I wanted to play Fumigate. We played a qualifier for the team tournament and thanks to my friend Brandon, I ended up playing boring old Temur energy. Kevin was playing RW approach and was destroying me freely, my point is, fumigate is just really well positioned right now. Feeling deflated I looked to see what decks I could play and ended up defaulting back to playing the old faithful Esper Gifts.

A string of 3-2 leagues left me feeling rather dis-hearted. The deck was doing what it did T3-T5 making big angels, sometime it just didn’t feel like it was enough. I took to online again to try and find what to play.

I watched the popular SaffronOlive stream last night (he plays all the sweet brews) and watched him 5-0 with a sweet UW based anointed procession deck that focused on embalming or eternalizing creatures and immediately started to think of things to change or things to add. The original decklist looked solid and he was winning quite comfortably, but as always I like to think outside the box.

This style of deck fits right up my alley, build on a gameplan then start to take over the game from there.

I don’t quite know how to start this, so what i’m going to do is start by giving you the dcklist that SaffronOlive used then show the changes I made and the reasoning for that.

There we have it! It’s a thing of beauty right? 4 X Adorned Pouncer!

So the question is: What did I change? The answer here would be not much. 26 lands seems like an awful lot and I did see him flood a fair bit, but the idea behind it is that we have so much to filter the extra lands that it shouldn’t be a problem. I mainly changed the sideboard around to add in some cards that in theory should be good. Here is my take and as always I will explain my card choices.

The idea behind this is that it is a hard threat for UB control or temur to remove. The embalm cost is a little high but I want to give this one a shot.

This thing is just a house against some creature based decks. When this copied my Angel of Invention it was really hard to beat.

There is none in the deck. Going forward though, this is something I want to try. it let’s you find the “silver bullets” of the deck. Card draw attached is also pretty sweet.

I do believe that this deck is quite strong after seeing it played a bunch.

Hopefully after next week I will be writing the report from the two tournaments I play in!

As always like, share all the usual and any comments or suggestions sound of down below!

Until next time.

Ronnie.
