Welcome back Disciple of Bolas!
With the recent bans, let’s look at a few Modern brews using some cards from Aether Revolt you might want to try in the new format.
1 Chalice of the Void
4 Mox Opal
1 Executioner’s Capsule
2 Pithing Needle
1 Grafdigger’s Cage
4 Thopter Foundry
4 Pentad Prism
1 Torpor Orb
4 Sword of the Meek
2 Ensnaring Bridge
1 Crucible of Worlds
1 Metalwork Colossus
Improvise is Convoke for artifacts and I feel it is a very strong ability. This deck uses Tezzeret’s ability to dig for the Thopter Sword combo or tries to find other hate cards for certain matchups. Whir helps you find those cards when you need them.
Spire of Industry is a land that will see a lot of play in artifact heavy builds. While Glimmervoid has the more severe drawback of getting sacrificed if you don’t have any artifacts, Spire of Industry will stay in play but won’t provide colored mana if you have no artifacts.
This guys fits in a variety of builds. One that I’ve seen which looks fun but might not be tier 2 is a humans list:
Metallic Mimic is a ‘lord’ style creature that can go in tribal decks. Merfolk, Goblin, Human, Allies, Vampire, etc may have a spot for his barrage of +1/+1 counters
Now I didn’t include Winding Constrictor because he accelerates Poison and that’s not good for your health in Modern. Still, that is a lot of growth are for +1/+1 counters.
One of the more talked about cards is Sram. What Sram does it push a deck in Modern to a new level. That deck is Cherri0s:
Back in my day (old guys talkin’), combo decks were named after cereals. Cherri0s is named after the Puresteel Paladin combo of free equipment to draw lots of cards usually ending in a finishing Storm card, like Grapeshot. What hurt this deck was the lack of consistency due to only having 4 Puresteel Paladin. Now the deck has functionally 8 copies thanks to Sram.
Fatal Push will be one of the most useful removal spells in Eternal formats. Heck, even King Leonidas I likes it:
Fatal Push will spread to many of the control heavy decks, like Jund, Esper, and Grixis. Below is a list from Levi Basham at last weekends SCG Classic:
As if you wanted to deal with more good removal.
This was not a card that I was completely prepared to talk about but the addition to the card must have been ridiculous to make Modern. The list below is from Jermol Jupiter who finished in 2nd at the same SCG Modern Classic with Abzan Chord:
3 Birds of Paradise
2 Eternal Witness
3 Kitchen Finks
4 Noble Hierarch
3 Renegade Rallier
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Tireless Tracker
2 Viscera Seer
3 Voice of Resurgence
2 Wall of Roots
2 Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit
2 Melira, Sylvok Outcast
1 Saffi Eriksdotter
Renegade Rallier gets some nice recursion going in this deck. Look at all of the cards with CMC of 2 or less. Could you imagine if Birthing Pod was legal? Honestly, I’d think that would be fun but not everyone would agree.
So what are you brewing up for Modern?
