Updating the Format for Amonkhet

Now it is incredibly close to the Amonkhet prerelease and I am hyped more than ever. I’m going to show you some decks that I expect to show up in the new format that is Amonkhet standard. I am deliberately going to leave out Mardu Vehicles and 4c Saheeli as I expect these decks to change a very little amount to none at all.  Without further anticipation, I give you my updated lists:

Temur Tower:

4 Torrential Gearhulk
1 Kefnet the Mindful
1 Natural Obsolescence
3 Dynavolt Tower
3 Hieroglyphic Illumination
2 Anticipate
4 Harnessed Lightning
2 Pull from Tomorrow
2 Censor
1 Essence Scatter
2 Negate
3 Void Shatter
1 Disallow
2 Shock
1 Magma Spray
2 Kozilek’s Return
4 Attune With Aether

4 Aether Hub
4 Spirebluff Canal
4 Botanical Sanctum
1 Sheltered Thicket
2 Lumbering Falls
3 Forest
2 Island
2 Mountain

Sideboard:

1 Dispel
4 Longtusk Cub
1 Negate
1 Natural Obsolescence
1 Negate
3 Tireless Tracker
1 Magma Spray
1 Essence Scatter
1 Heaven // Earth
1 Release the Gremlins

Now it might sound strange, but I’m happy about the cards Censor and Essence Scatter getting printed in this set. Censor is good early as you can make them play around it.  This will buy you turns to set up but also can cycle it later in the game for a real card.  Essence Scatter being able to counter a 2 drop and Archangel Avacyn makes it fairly good now.

Getting to play the card Pull from Tomorrow to refill your hand late in the game and put some random card in the graveyard to be flashed back with Torrential Gearhulk is really nice.  I think card Kefnet the Mindful is great.  It comes down early and gives you advantage in long drawn out games just by letting you draw cards and then getting to play cards that I mentioned earlier you can easily just beat down with it a 5/5 flying indestructible is pretty hard to deal with.

G/r Monsters

4 Servant of the Conduit
4 Channeler Initiate
4 Walking Ballista
3 Rhonas the Indomitable
4 Vizier of the Menagerie
4 Glorybringer
2 Samut, Voice of Dissent
1 Honoured Hydra

4 Attune With Aether
3 Shock
4 Harnessed Lightning

4 Game Trail
2 Sheltered Thicket
4 Aether Hub
4 Cinder Glade
6 Forest
3 Mountain

Sideboard

2 Release the Gremlins
3 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
2 Manglehorn
2 Prowling Serpopard
3 Tireless Tracker
1 Magma Spray
1 Cut // Ribbons
1 Appetite for the Unnatural

Now the next thing I’m going to look at is a G/r monsters deck. These decks popped up a lot during Ravnica-Theros Standard because you had cards like Domri Rade, Polukranos the World Eater and Stormbreath Dragon. This is what I would play in this standard if I was wanting to play it as a lot of real monsters that seem great to play with.

Now I love decks like this and Amonkhet has so many good cards that fit right into this type of shell also getting 8 actually good mana dorks.  This lets you ramp into powerful cards like Glorybringer and the Vizer.  I love Glorybringer as it’s a Flametongue Kavu / Stormbreath Dragon hybrid.  With the Samut, Voice of Dissent you can usually always attack with it.

There is also the card Cut // Ribbons in the board.  I feel I want at least 1 copy of this card in the 75.  Yes, it’s a sorcery but it kills most big things well and can randomly burn people out after they have been hit a few times with your big angry monsters.

The last deck list I want to look at is a White Weenie Deck based around a Humans theme this hasn’t really been seen since Shadows Over Innistrad time.  With Amonkhet coming out, I think it’s the perfect time for its return.

White Humans

4 Thraben Inspector
4 Town Gossipmonger
4 Expedition Envoy
4 Glory-Bound Initiate
4 Thalia’s Lieutenant
4 Hanweir Militia Captain
2 Thalia, Heretic Cathar

4 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

4 Always Watching
4 Declaration in Stone
2 Stasis Snare

19 Plains
1 Westvale Abbey

Sideboard

2 Stasis Snare
2 Cast Out
3 Fragmentize
2 Cartouche of Solidarity
2 Oketra the True
2 Plains
2 Authority of the Consuls

This deck is the most suspect of the 3 to be actually good but I have talked to some friends that think it might have legs this format because of the new cards that are coming out in Amonkhet. Glory-Bound Initiate actually attacks as a 5/5 vigilant, lifelink with Always Watching in play, which is amazing on turn 3.

Most of the spoilers are out now but there is still some to come.  These lists are definitely up to debate for the next format, but I am looking forward to it and think these could all be real decks in the format.

Thank you for reading this as always.  I’d love to hear your thoughts on card choices and things that you think could be good.
